Endlers (Poecilia wingei) are a small, colorful livebearer tropical fish that originate from Venezuela. Endlers are relatively new to the tropical fish hobby with most strains introduced later than 2006.
Often called Endlers guppies, Endlers Livebearers closely resemble guppies (Poecilia reticulata), in fact for several years there was quite a bit of controversy over the species.
Male adult pure Endlers are all generally the same size reaching a length of approximately 3/4″ – 1″ long. They will usually have a somewhat long slender body and bright coloration.
We raise several types of Endlers and guppies. Our specialty is raising Orchid Endlers and unique variations of Orchid Endlers.
Because the Endlers Livebearer so easily breeds with guppies and perhaps other livebearers it was important to create a system to help ensure the preservation of the pure form of the species.
First of all, the topic of the ECS and Endlers and guppies has been and probably will always be a highly disputed topic. The purpose of this article is to help explain why there are so many differing opinions and to help clarify some of the confusion.
There are two main sources by which the majority of the worlds Endlers have come from at this time; Adrian Hernandez via Armando Pou (United States) and Philippe Voisin (Netherlands).
Most of the Endlers previously discussed on this blog refer are Endlers that were discovered in 2007 or earlier in the Cumana region of Venezuela.
There have been recent reports that explorations attempting to collect many of the colorful strains of Endlers Livebearers from Venezuela have have been unsuccessful.
Endlers are very active and fun fish to watch in a community tank or as a single species tank. Many fish keepers don’t want to go through the expense or trouble of breeding Endlers
The Endlers Livebearer or Endler (Poecilia wingei) is easy to care for and can be quite rewarding. They are undemanding fish and are ideal for beginner and expert aquarium hobbyists alike.
Endlers can tolerate an amazing range of water conditions. This is one of the reasons Endlers may be an ideal fish for new aquarium hobbyists.
Feeding your Endlers is not a hard process as they are quite easy to care for. Over the past few years we have been experimenting with several kinds of food for our Endlers and their fry.
What’s the best food for Endlers? Endlers are an omnivores fish that will eat just about anything they can get into their small mouths. For better health Endlers should be given a variety of foods rather than a single food all the time.
The old adage “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” certainly applies to caring for Endlers Livebearers. Providing a clean stable environment for your Endlers on one of the most important aspects in keeping your Endlers healthy.
While Ich is one of the most common diseases found in tropical fish aquariums, Ich on Endlers is not as common as it is on other tropical fish. This is due to the higher temperatures that Endlers prefer.
There is a possibility that Endlers may hybridize with several related species from the Poeciliidae family of livebearers including Mosquito Fish (Gambusia), Mollies, Swamp Guppies (Micropoecilia picta) or other livebearers.
When Endlers where first introduced into the hobby they were often thought to simply be another type of Guppy. This is understandable due to the similarities between the two species.
We love hybrid Endlers however we also have some nice Fancy Guppy strains as well as pure N class Endlers. We have found that the Endlers are by far easier to keep and breed over the fancy guppies.
At first glance pure or N-class Endlers look very much like wild guppies. With small spots of black and dashes of color it is easy to understand why many people get Endlers and wild Guppies confused.
Endlers grow fast and young fry can be bred as early as a few months after they are born. Female Endlers can drop fry every 26-30 days.
We are often asked how we get our Endlers to look so beautiful. To be honest with you it’s really not that difficult. First of all healthy, high-quality Endlers are simply beautiful anyway.
Every once in awhile I hear someone say that they would like to have a true wild Endlers Livebearer rather than a developed strain of an Endler Livebearer.
Orchid Endlers were line bred into a unique strain by Adrian Hernandez from a population of Endlers collected in Venezuela by Armando Pau. Orchid Endlers were the first strain of Endlers we chose to work with due to their bright orange and green coloration which is accented by black coloration on their bodies.
Endlers Livebearers are a relatively new species available to the tropical fish hobbyist. Although it was first discovered by Franklyn F Bind in 1937 in Laguna de Patos in Venezuela, it was not introduced into the aquarium trade until after it was rediscovered by Dr. John Endler in 1975.
